Motifs to Masterpieces – Teaching Composition from year 9-13
This is an online workshop via Zoom.

Date: Wednesday October 13 2021. 10:00am – 1:00pm
This course is ideal for very beginning composition teachers through to experienced. There will be loads of new ideas shared and a pathway from beginner composers to year 12.
The workshop will include:
Year 9-10 Composing- First steps in composing, generating ideas and group composing. Motifs and Themes and the art of the song.
Year 11-13 Composing- Compositional devices and orchestration, Composing project
You will also learn:
- Scaffolded plan for teaching composition and song writing
- Generating ideas
- Presenting compositions in audio and visual formats
- The composer’s secret!
All attendees will have access to online resources to download from the PD and ongoing online mentoring.
Please note this workshop is primarily about the pedagogy of composing and not using music technology. We will be using some online technology to create composition exemplars and to practice skills.
About Andrew Stopps.
Originally from Adelaide, Andrew Stopps is the Director of The Teaching Practice (New Zealand), and mentors teachers, and run workshops for students and teachers both in Australia and New Zealand. He is a visiting lecturer for Victoria University (Wellington NZ) in the School of Education. He is an established composer of concert band, orchestral and small ensemble music with his music being performed in USA, Japan, UK, Australia and New Zealand. He has also developed teacher resources for sale including for the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra and the NZ Symphony Orchestra.
He has a wealth of music education experience spanning 4 countries and 3 decades and will be sharing anecdotes from his time in the classroom from teaching in disused toilet blocks in the Australian Outback to his time on The Hobbit with Sir Peter Jackson.
